Queremos invitaros a visitar la próxima Feria Educativa Británica, la mayor feria europea de educación británica, que tendrá lugar en Madrid los días 23-24 de octubre, en el Hotel Eurobuilding y el 24 de octubre en el Hotel Constanza de Barcelona.  Universidades, colegios, institutos, escuelas de idiomas y muchísimas sesiones de información convierten esta Feria en el referente que necesitará cualquier persona (ya sea profesional, padre o alumno) interesada en estudiar en el Reino Unido.  Como profesores de inglés, es posible que vuestros alumnos os pregunten sobre educación en el Reino Unido.  Esta es la ocasión para informarse para todos aquellos interesados.  Todos los asistentes recibirán una publicación con los datos más relevantes sobre la educación en el Reino Unido.  Puedes ver el programa completo e inscribirte en http://www.britishcouncil.org/spain/feria-estudiar-en-el-reino-unido-2013. 

 

El encuentro incluye más de 15 sesiones para profesionales y padres.  Por ejemplo:

·         Gillian Flaxman, Directora del British Council School, explicará el National Curriculum,

·         Carolina Jiménez, Directora de Educación del British Council, explicará el sistema educativo británico, convalidación, programas de estudios e información práctica para hacer una solicitud, pedir un préstamo o beca, etc.  en diferentes sesiones

·         Richard Gerver dará una conferencia sobre innovación educativa.

Estimados colegas,

Nos complace anunciaros que el sábado 26 de octubre celebraremos en el Hotel Sercotel Sorolla Palace (Av. Corts Valencianes, 58 - Valencia) una nueva jornada de formación para el profesorado. A partir de este momento queda abierto el plazo de inscripción para la misma. Os rogamos máxima difusión entre vuestro equipo docente.

¿QUÉ HAREMOS?

En esta ocasión hemos organizado una mañana en la que los participanntes tendrán la oportunidad de asistir hasta a tres seminarios diferentes sobre distintos exámenes, en tres franjas horarias consecutivas. Las plazas están limitadas por lo que os animamos a inscribiros en cuanto os sea posible.

En cuanto al contenido, esta vez prescindiremos de la explicaciones teóricas sobre el formato o contenido y nos centraremos en ofrecer una serie de estrategias clave para la preparación de los exámenes. De ahí que hayamos titulado la sesión 'Success Strategies for Cambridge English Exams'. En todos los casos se tratará de sesiones breves de 50-55 minutos.

¿QUIÉN HABLARÁ?

Todas las sesiones estarán impartidas por miembros de nuestro equipo de examinadores con una probada experiencia. Haremos un descanso de 45 minutos, por lo que tendréis también la oportunidad de compartir con ellos tiempo aparte de las propias charlas, para plantearles cualquier tipo de duda que podáis tener.

NOVEMBER READING "ADRIFT ON THE NILE" - Naguib Mahfouz

Hiya All!

Here's the movie I'd mentioned "based", rather broadly, on the book we're reading for November.

I must warn everyone that though it's quite a "cine de barrio" version of Naguib Mahfouz' classic, it does help to lend perspective to this incredible book.

I'm  also adding a review of the book to help you enjoy it as much as I did.

             Review :   ADRIFT ON THE NILE - Naguib Mahfouz

      The title, Adrift on the Nile, certainly describes the lives of the characters that populate it, especially civil servant Anis Zaki. They are adrift in an Egypt that allows only limited outlets -- political, cultural, sexual -- refusing (or unable) to take anything too seriously. And for most of the novel they are literally adrift on the Nile, as much of the action (or inaction) takes place aboard Anis' houseboat. 

       They talk, they smoke kif (hashish) from a water pipe, and Anis' friends use the houseboat for more intimate socialising as well. It is a permissive island, a sort of get-away from real life -- though Anis, in particular, is unable to escape. He also doesn't appear to be very good at his job, but doesn't have the creative (or romantic) instincts of his friends that make them appear freer and happier. 

       Much of the novel is in the form of dialogue, a mix of flirting and philosophising -- some of it surprisingly risqué (at least to readers accustomed to a stricter picture of Islamic culture). A new member of the group, a young journalist, Samara Bahgat, adds to the mix. After she has participated in several of their evenings Anis finds a notebook of hers in which she has outlined a scenario for a play, including descriptions of the various figures in it -- modeled closely on the houseboat revelers; the scenario and descriptions are reproduced in full, taking up almost an entire chapter. It is very much their story, a variation on the theme of the novel itself, guided by "the collapse of belief -- belief in anything." 

       The crisis comes when they decide to go on an expedition late at night, taking a car out for a drive. Catastrophe follows; instead of dealing with it, they flee -- and try to return to their relatively carefree lives. 

       Anis, in particular, has trouble dealing with it, and manages to get himself fired from his job. He insists the group should take responsibilty for what they wrought, but the others are less willing. 

       Adrift on the Nile is a dark look at a troubled society, the surface merriment and excess barely veiling the very fundamental faults in it. It's effectively presented, though the teasing banter can get to be a bit wearisome, and the book seems at times more sketch than novel. Certainly, Mahfouz displays his considerable range with this book, very different from many of his others, and bits are excellent. Of some interest, if not entirely a success.

       

Apavac Reading Club latest

We held our first ever reading club meeting last Friday about  Benjamin Zephaniah's  "The refugee boy". We gathered around some delicious tea and pastries provided by our fantastic president Fina at Espai Verd social club and talked  non stop about literature for two hours. Michelle , who had suggested the title, chaired the meeting and picked our brains. It was lovely to see the " Teacher " in each one surface, finding parallels in their classrooms, sharing experiences and planning how to use the book in class!  Here's looking forward to our next book, Adrift on the Nile by Egyptian Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz. on Friday, November 22nd
